Sri Ganapathi Mess, PJ - Banana Leaf Rice

A good friend from Australia was back for her holidays, so we caught up over some banana leaf rice. Off we went to Sri Ganapathi Mess at PJ Old Town. The restaurant is actually located in a converted bungalow (right opposite a school - Sekolah Kebangsaan Petaling Jaya) - apparently lots of people have trouble finding it, however if you use Waze, it will bring you right to the door.

Once you enter the premises, one of the staff would bring you into one of many dining rooms in the restaurant to be seated. The rooms are air-conditioned, hence you can definitely dine in comfort.

The vegetarian banana leaf rice (RM6) comes with rice, 3 types of vegetables, acar and pappadoms, all served on a banana leaf. You can choose to have either parboiled or steamed rice, topped with one of four types of curries (during our visit it was chicken, fish, dhal or bayam (spinach)). I had the chicken and fish curries, and they were thick and delicious. The pappadoms were also thin and crispy, very nice. However, the vegetables that came with the BLR did not excite us.

The highlight of our meal was the fried sotong. It was deep fried to crispy perfection, along with curry leaves and onions. It arrived piping hot as it is fried to order.

The mutton varuval was also excellent. You can choose to have it either in small, medium or large size, we went for the medium which costs RM13. Tender, flavorful chunks of meat.

Deep fried bittergourd is an extra order here and not complimentary. A bit too crunchy, almost hard.

Rasam is also chargeable at RM1.50 each. Rasam is taken to aid digestion. Hence, we were disappointed when we took our first sip - it wasn't tangy and tasted like coconut milk was added to it.

  1. Was at our favourite Indian place here yesterday and I was trying to persuade the boss to have banana leaf - once a week at least, Saturday lunch special. Bet that would help promote the place. I love banana leaf but none here. :(

I didn't satisfy all my food cravings during my whistle stop visit over CNY!

Question - we are doing more and more vegetarian days/weeks so wondered if you had any easy and filling recipes for weekday dinners? I loved that spatzle recipe you listed below - definitely going to try that. Or maybe websites you can point me to for vegetarian ideas?
