Where to Get Your Zong Zi 粽子 / Bak Chang in KL

Zong Zi 粽子, also known as bak chang or glutinous rice dumpling, is a traditional Chinese favourite most commonly made and savoured during the much-celebrated Duanwu Festival (Dragon Boat Festival). The dumplings are usually stuffed with a variety of different fillings along with glutinous rice and wrapped in bamboo and lotus leaves and steamed or boiled until sticky, fragrant and tender.

Li Yen at The Ritz-Carlton KL will be offering three signature dumplings for the upcoming festival. The dumplings will be available from May 17th to 30th, both for dine-in and takeaway.

The savoury Duck and Chestnut Glutinous Rice Dumpling is an exquisite creation that includes a total of 9 ingredients, such as roasted duck meat, roast pork (siew yoke), dried shrimp, salted egg yolk, chestnut and dried scallops and wrapped in both bamboo and lotus leaves and steamed for about 5 hours. Each dumpling is priced at RM43 nett, which is pretty good value as they're pretty huge (about 3x the size of a regular one).




For the sweet version, there will be Lotus paste as well as Red bean paste glutinous rice dumpling (RM16). The red bean dumpling was surprisingly very good, best savoured with honey.




Li Yen is located on Level 2 of The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur. Lunch is served from 12.00pm to 2.30pm from Monday to Saturday and 10.30am to 2.30pm on Sundays and Public Holidays. Dinner is available from 6.30pm to 10.30pm daily.

Shanghai Restaurant in JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur will be showcasing two specialty dumplings this month. These dumplings are available for dine-in and take-away until May 30th.

The Iberico and Salted Egg Yolk Glutinous Rice Dumpling is a delectable savoury dumpling filled with ingredients such as Iberico belly meat, salted egg yolk, dried scallops, mushroom, chestnut, sliced black bean and white and black glutinous rice. The Iberico pork belly is marinated in five spice powder. The dumpling is then boiled for 3 hours, until the meat is tender and the rice, soft and fragrant. I really liked this one - the addition of the sliced black bean gives this a healthier touch, and lots of nice textures. The flavours are spot on too. Each dumpling is priced at RM46 nett.

For those who prefer their dumplings sweet, try the Sweet Osmanthus and Five-Bean Glutinous Rice Dumpling, a colourful creation of five-coloured beans (red bean, mung bean, sliced black bean, sliced yellow bean, black eyed peas) and sweet bean paste, served with a homemade osmanthus syrup. Priced at RM29 nett each.




Located on Level 1 at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai is open from Monday to Saturday for lunch from 12pm to 2.30pm and for dinner from 6.30pm to 10.30pm.
