CNY 2018: Tao Chinese Cuisine, InterContinental Kuala Lumpur

InterContinental Kuala Lumpur welcomes the Year of the Dog with luxurious Oriental feasts at Tao Chinese Cuisine, perfect for gatherings with family, friends and business associates.

From 15 January until 2 March 2018, the restaurant will be offering three set menus, namely Harmony (RM1,988 nett), Prosperity (RM2,388 nett) and Longevity (RM2,688 nett) per table of 10 persons.  During the Chinese New Year period, one of the most important rituals is the giving and receiving of "lai see", also known as red packet. Following the customs, the hotel will be giving away exclusive ang pow with complimentary dining voucher for orders of the Set Menu. Please scroll to the bottom for the full menus.

Diners can enjoy a bottle of champagne (additional RM680 for Laurent Perrier Brut or RM399 for Ayala Brut) with the Festive Set Menus

The prosperity toss, aka "lo hei" is a must-have dish during a Lunar New Year dinner as it represents good health, prosperity and success. This year's signature Yee Sang at Tao is the Tuna and Salmon Roe Yee Sang, priced at RM108 nett for half portion and RM198 nett for full portion. Salmon roe symbolises "yi xun mun tong" - prosperous family and many offsprings.

Other Yee Sang here include Australian "20 head" whole abalone, Soft shell crab with wasabi sauce, Fresh Atlantic salmon and  Tempura mushrooms with Korean sweet pear. As part of the Prosperity Set Menu that we sampled, we had the Fresh Atlantic Salmon with Korean Sweet Pear Yee Sang. Instead of lime (which is usually squeezed over the salmon), they use apple vinegar and oil is substituted with the healthier olive oil. Such a refreshingly fresh and tasty yee sang, and the addition of salmon fish skin is fab as it adds great texture! Just makes you want to eat more of it!

According to Chinese Banquet Chef Ngoi Siak Kong, three of the must-have dishes in his home during a Chinese New Year meal are soup, chicken and duck.

The Double boiled fish maw with sea treasure soup was nourishing with delicious, luxurious ingredients such as sea cucumber, fish maw, scallops and mushroom.

Chef Ngoi brings the taste of homecooking to guests with the Crispy roasted chicken with spicy sesame vinegar sauce. The sauce had a lovely spicy, tangy kick to it, and went well with the moist chicken.

We also got to try the Roasted Duck with Chinese herbs, from the Longevity Set Menu. Not just any roast duck, Chef Ngoi has stuffed fragrant Angelica herbs into the duck's cavity, sealed and then roasted for 45 minutes. The use of herbs enhances the flavour of the meat. Furthermore, Angelica herb means "returning" hence representing the act of "returning home" for the auspicious occasion. The taste of herbs was subtle and complemented the duck well.

Fish is also a must-have during Chinese New Year meals as its homonym "yu" represents abundance for the new year. The tiger garoupa fish was ligthly steamed and topped with crispy, fragrant golden garlic.

Prawns symbolises laughter and happiness, so eat more and laugh your way to the new year. The tiger prawns are sauteed with chef's special Mongolian butter sauce, which was savoury and peppery.

The next dish is brimming with auspicious meanings, as sea cucumber, dried oyster and sea moss symbolises happiness, good things and prosperity respectively. The sea cucumber is stewed until tender, and then served along meaty black mushrooms and dried oyster sea moss roll with broccoli.

Little parcels containing soft, sticky and flavorful rice with salted egg yolk rounded up our meal nicely before dessert.

We finished our meal with a refreshing bowl of Chilled Oolong tea syrup with aloe vera, peach, peach gum and osmanthus, as well as crispy deep fried sweet potato ninko (Chinese New Year cake), made to resemble mandarin oranges. So adorable!

  1. Fine linen, real tablecloth! Classy...and I like how it is not that gaudy red colour, the typical cheap ones at most Chinese restaurants.
