Newens Tea House 'A Journey Through Tea': April to June 2018 Specials

Afternoon tea is a time-honoured British tradition and one of the best places to immerse in the traditional ritual of afternoon tea in Kuala Lumpur is at Newens Tea House. Located in Starhill Gallery, Newens Tea House is renowned for their 300-year-old tea drinking heritage as well as their world-renowned Maids of Honour tart – first enjoyed by King Henry VIII in the 1500s.

In the early 16th century, Anne Boleyn, second wife of the Tudor King, Henry VIII of England, was relaxing in the grounds of Richmond Palace surrounded by her "Maids of Honour" when one of her maids produced a silver dish of delicious tarts she had made. Suddenly, the King appeared and was offered one of the tarts and upon trying it declared it to be the finest tasting he had ever experienced. He enjoyed it so much that he ordered the Maid of Honour who made it be imprisoned and the recipe locked in a box, so she could make the recipe for the King and his household exclusively.

The recipe remained a closely guarded secret until it was disclosed to a bakery in the small Regency town of Richmond in the early 18th century, where a young man by the name of Robert Newens was serving his apprenticeship. Robert Newens subsequently opened his first shop in King Street, Richmond in 1850s and has been serving the Maids of Honour tarts ever since.

Newens Tea House adds a refreshing twist to the afternoon tea by bringing you a selection of tea and scrumptious pastries inspired by tea cultures from around the globe, through its A Journey Through Tea series available throughout the year.

Newens welcomes the month of April and pays tribute to the royals with Tea with Anne Boleyn.
